3 Business Lessons Learnt Whilst Travelling Half The World!

olympicIt’s a long one this week….

Each year for the past few years, I make my annual pilgrimage to the USA. I do it for two reasons – one is business where I combine working with corporate sales teams, small businesses and honing my skills in the area of sales development so I can stay one step ahead of my clients and continue to deliver value.

The other reason is for pleasure where I take time out with my husband, hang out with friends and family, step into the guise of tourist and jump in and out of being a kid again.

And here-in lies my first extremely important business lesson.

1. Factor in the Fun!

We spend so much time IN the business and ON the business that we sometimes forget to take the best bits OUT of the business – and that is to remember why we are doing what we do. To remember that our role, whether it be a leader, a salesperson or a business owner, is simply a vehicle towards something bigger and better. What we do from 7am – 11pm (aka 9-5), 5 days a week and sometimes on weekends, doesn’t define who we really are – yet so many people link their identity to their day job. Get caught up, get stressed, get out of touch with loved ones…and even out of love!

Lose the job or lose the business and who are you then?

2. Be Proud, Passionate and Paid Up

You can be proud about your role, your product and your company and you can also be passionate. But are you paid up? Are you truly invested? Will you do what you have to do to get the job done or do you just do what you have to do to get the job done?

Remember the early days when you said you were the right person for the role? When you said you had what it took? Maybe you still are that person… Maybe not… When you’re invested, things happen! You meet people who can help you, you get clear on what and why you’re doing what you’re doing, your numbers make sense, your KPI’s have purpose, your clients lives change yet you may not even realise that ripple effect is because of you!

Being ‘paid up’ is personal leadership at its best – when was the last time you had some skin in the game? Your own game!

3. Find Your Tribe

As more and more people leave corporate and start up their own ventures (According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2011 Report entrepreneurs are now numbering near 400 million in 54 countries) it is really important to have a tribe who ‘gets’ both you and the difference you want to make in the world so that you feel connected and confident, else being an entrepreneur can get both lonely and a place where self doubt steps in very quickly.

Equally, if you are in corporate it is also important you have a tribe you can bounce ideas off, feel safe and also be vulnerable with in order to move forward, because you are also running your own business, albeit a micro-business. And unless you leverage that tribe, unless you have an environment of growth then you also run the risk of stagnation and possible extinction.

Whilst I am extremely fortunate to have a husband who supports me completely and who is a national sales manager in his own right, that is still not enough sometimes. Hence the importance of my tribe – 30 female sales leaders from Canada and North America who are world class speakers, authors, trainers and mentors (www.salesshebang.com). A tribe that ‘gets me’ and totally understands the ‘pride, passion and paid-up-ness’ of what I do and why I do it.

Who do you have? Who do you bounce ideas off? Who do you trust enough to do that with? It may not be 30 people, but it must start with one.

While you might now be thinking about your own ability to factor in the fun, become more proud, passionate and paid up and find your own tribe, then I invite you to consider the following:

Three (3) executive coaching/sales mentoring spots have opened up for the remainder of 2014 and what that means is that 3 sales leaders, sales professionals or business owners with a view to increasing revenues and profits, will work one on one with me through accountability, brainstorming, personal leadership skills and on-the job tasks to make change happen in their world and with their results. I hope one of them is you!

Please send us a return email if you would like to be a part of this program or if you have any questions and we will gladly steer you down the path of making change happen for you.

Be Bold and Brilliant!
